ふるさとの歌［11-02］

イングランドへ渡った恋人を想う

これまでも頻回に書いてきましたが、19世紀半ば、アイルランドはジャガイモ大飢饉に見舞われました。
そのため、多くのアイルランド人が米国やオーストラリア、そして隣国イングランドへ移住せざるを得なくなりました。イングランド領だったアイルランドにイングランドがとった政策は非情きわまりないもので、後に英国のブレア首相（Prime Minister Tony Blair）が謝罪したことも書きました。

今回のふるさとの歌はイングランドへ渡った恋人を想う曲で、英国のシャーロット・アリントン・バーナード（Charlotte Alingon Barnard）がクラリベル（Claribel）というペンネームで1856年に発表した「アイルランドへ帰っておいで（Come Back To Erin）」です。
キラニー（Killarney）の歌としましたが、特にキラニーにこだわらず、当時のアイルランド情勢を思い歌ってください。

歌詞にはアイルランド語から取った単語が多く含まれ、またやや古い単語もありますので、中高生には少し難しいかもしれません。
多少の解説を加えます。

*Mavourneen：アイルランド語のmo(my)＋muirnín(darling)→moの後でmに軟音化がおきてmhuirnínとなり、mhは他のヨーロッパ言語のwに相当し、発音はヴです。英語ではその発音を英語転記し、mo mhuirnín→mavourneenとしたものです。大事な人、恋人等の意味です。まさに「my darling」です。
**Aroon：これもアイルランド語RiúnあるいはRúnから来ています。わが子よといった意味です。
***thy：thou thy thee＝you your you
****Mayflow'r：17世紀にピルグリム・ファザーズが米大陸へ渡るときに乗った船、メイフラワー号にたとえています。
*****colleen：アイルランド語のcailínに由来し、少女の意味です。
