ふるさとの歌［11-05］

メイヨーの小村ノックに突如現れた聖母マリア

それはアイルランドがジャガイモ大飢饉の惨状からまだ抜けきっていない1879年のことでした。
アイルランドのメイヨー州にノック（Knock）という小村があります。その教区の教会に1879年8月21日の夜、聖母マリアとヨゼフ、それに伝道者ヨハネの霊が現れたのです。雨が降り注いでいました。
その背後には祭壇もあり、祭壇には子羊が乗っていました。そしてその上には天使（エンジェル）たちが舞っていました。それらの霊は約2時間そこに留まり、雨の中で5歳から75歳の老若男女15人が見届けていたと言われます。

住民が目にしたのは実際、何であったのかは謎ですが、種々の調査の結果、この現象のおこったのは事実であったと認められ、この教会はその後聖マリア寺院（St.Mary's Shrine）として認知されました。
1979年にはこの出来事から100周年を記念し、当時のローマ法皇ヨハネ・パウロII世も訪れています。また、1993年にはマザー・テレサの訪問も受けました。

そんな話をもとに、ノックの聖母（Our Lady Of Knock）という曲が書かれました。作者は大統領選挙に立候補したり、国会議員になったりと話題の多かったアイルランドのシンガー/ソングライター、ローズマリー・スカロン（Rosemary Scallon）（Dana=ダーナ）です。

歌詞は難しくありませんが、カトリックやキリスト教に馴染みのない方のために少しだけ註をつけておきます。（私もキリスト教徒でなく、ましてやカトリック教徒でもありませんが。）
